  1. Dear Julie, my 5-year old was recently diagnosed with ALL preB-cell. i have just been browsing leukemia blogs to see what is waiting for us and I found you. We are in a very similar situation. I, too, am an American. i live in German and it looks like we are following the same protocol. From what our doctor told us today, the protocal used in Europe and Australia (AIEOP-BRM 2009) is a bit different than the protocol used in UK and USA. She said the prognosis is the same for both. Our son is also in the study.
We are Day 21 today. We got the difficult news on Monday that the bone marrow aspiration of Day 15 has moved him into the HIgh Risk group.
I also am a homeschooling mom, though because of difficulties with the law here in Austria, I have had to put three of my children back in the local school. I still have my 16 year old at home. Thank you so much for your blog posts. They have given me hope although our Joey's treatment is soon to take a different route. One question, did Jemma have mucusitis (mouth sores) and what did you do to help her. This and fungus of the bum are our biggest struggles right now!

    1. Bobette,

Unfortunately I know what you are going through and am so sorry for you and your family. It is a rough time, but there are ups and downs and it is short term.

Jemma didn't have any problems with her mouth. She did and still does use an oil based mouthwash from the doctors three times per day. I personally believe that eating healthy minimizes mouth issues. One boy going through treatment I know of had many problems. He also liked to eat candy. Jemma has been on a strict no candy, chips, junk food diet throughout her treatment. The doctors don't require this it was my choice. Although I don't know for sure that the diet has helped, I do know she hasn't had mouth issues.

She did have a few issues with sores on her bottom around day 165. Here's the post.

After this there were a few more issues. I put cream on her bottom every night and sometimes during the day. Once she had the sores they seemed to come back easier as the skin was new and thin.

How are the siblings dealing with this? Here is a post which addresses some difficulties my 11 year old daughter had.

I wish you and Joey the best over the upcoming difficult year.

      Julie
